Lesotho 2026: Day 6

Speaking for the construction site group, I think we鈥檝e settled into a pretty nice routine over there. We have mixing cement down, and most of the day was spent taking turns pickaxing a big hole. It was inspiring to think that one day soon that big hole will be an outhouse, hopefully it鈥檚 deep enough. We鈥檙e at a point where we鈥檙e pretty much just hacking at one giant rock in the middle of the hole, which has become public enemy number one amongst us. Although we may not be around long enough to actually defeat the giant rock, I think we made a respectable dent in it today. We鈥檒l get one more chance tomorrow.

Aside from the big hole and making endless amounts of cement, we had a chance to hear from a speaker from Sentebale, an NGO centered around raising safe sex awareness amongst adolescents in Lesotho. Mme spoke on the different methods of outreach, as well as roadblocks faced, that Sentebale encounters and utilizes. Having been to Lesotho many times myself throughout the course of 20 years, missions such as those spread by Sentebale are really nice to see, given that an organization openly discussing matters such as HIV would not have been so welcomed or embraced a decade ago. And I gotta say I鈥檓 impressed with the questions that our group asks to the speakers we have had so far. The quality and quantity of questions that are brought up shows that students here are really engaging with and embracing Lesotho in a way that鈥檚 exciting to see.
